Overview
Math Facts is a student’s ability to accurately and efficiently recall basic math facts—such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division without relying on counting strategies. Achieving automaticity with basic math facts helps students to:
- Spend less mental energy on basic fact calculations
- Solve more complex problems with confidence
- Stay focused during problem-solving instead of getting stuck on basics
Fluency is not about rushing students or creating anxiety around speed. It’s about building automaticity over time, through consistent practice, feedback, and opportunities to improve.
Prodigy's Math Facts
Prodigy's Math Facts experience is built inside Prodigy Education's platform, designed to help students build fluency through short, engaging practice sessions that fit naturally into classroom routines.
Students practice math facts by answering questions inside tailored game-based experiences such as pet racing where accuracy and response time both matter, but timers are never shown to students. On the teacher side, Prodigy Math Facts provides clear visibility into:
- Which facts students are fluent in
- Where students are still developing accuracy or speed
- How progress changes over time
Why Prodigy Math Facts is different
Many fact fluency tools are built as digital worksheets and do little to engage students. Prodigy math facts was built based on interviews with hundreds of teachers and students to serve both users' needs. We've designed an experience that's both fun for students, while also being powerful and highly customizable for teachers.
Free
Prodigy math facts is completely free for teachers, and all students can access one daily math facts session (60 questions) for free each day, making it the perfect classroom tool! Students can access unlimited daily sessions at home with the purchase of a Prodigy membership.

What data will I see as a teacher?
- Teachers will be able to see your students’ progress in your Prodigy teacher account by selecting “Math Facts” from the left hand menu.
-
You will be able to see detailed session information, including the facts that students have answered correctly and incorrectly each day.
-
You will also be able to see each student’s fluency score for each operation (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division):
- Teachers can also customize the facts your students see by selecting “Change Program” at the top of this page.
What is the curriculum behind the Math Facts program?
- By default, each student will get a standard curriculum based on their chosen grade. Please see below for the curricula for each grade levels.
- Please note: A student must answer a fact correctly 3 times in a row and within the fluency threshold (default is 6 seconds for most grades) in order to be marked fluent in that fact.
- Grade 1: Students start with addition with sums up to 10. Once fluency is achieved they move on to subtraction with 10 as the biggest number. Then, they will get mixed operations from the facts above.
- The default fluency threshold is 6 seconds.
- Grade 2: Students start with addition up to 9+9. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to subtraction up to 18-9. Then, they will get mixed operations from the facts above.
- The default fluency threshold is 6 seconds.
- Grade 3: Students start with addition up to 12+12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to subtraction up to 24-12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to multiplication up to 9x9. Then, they will get mixed operations from the facts above.
- The default fluency threshold is 6 seconds.
- Grade 4: Students start with addition up to 12+12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to subtraction up to 24-12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to multiplication up to 9x9. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to division up to 81/9. Then, they will get mixed operations from the facts above.
- The default fluency threshold is 6 seconds.
- Grade 5: Students start with addition up to 12+12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to subtraction up to 24-12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to multiplication up to 12x12. Once fluency is achieved, they move on to division up to 144/12. Then, they will get mixed operations from the facts above.
- The default fluency threshold is 6 seconds.
- Grade 6+ - Students get mixed facts from all of the fact tables in grade 5.
- The default fluency threshold is 3 seconds.
- Teachers can also customize the facts your students see by selecting “Change Program” at the top of the Math Facts page.
How do I change the curriculum or assign specific facts to my student(s)?
- In order to change the curriculum or assign specific facts, you need to click the “Change Program” button on the top of the Math Facts page
-
This will allow you to move your student(s) to a different standard curriculum (e.g. if an advanced 2nd grade student is ready to tackle the grade 3 curriculum), or assign a custom program.
- A custom program allows you completely customize the facts that our student(s) see. You can select facts from each of the operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division)
- In a custom program, you can also change the fluency threshold (e.g. shorten to 3 seconds, or lengthen to 12 seconds), and select a time period for the custom program. After that time period has expired, your student(s) will resume the standard program they were on before the custom program started.
- In order to apply your standard or custom program, please ensure you click on “Review Program” and then “Apply Program”.
